What it says about you

Opponents choose the Caro-Kann, and you mostly answer with the Exchange: 3.exd5 cxd5 4.Bd3 Nc6 5.c3 Nf6 6.Bf4 Bg4 7.Qb3, a reversed Carlsbad structure. That is a safe, low-theory choice, but it gives a solid opponent exactly the quiet game they want. At 47% over 15 games, this is the only White opening where you score under 50%.

How you play it

The numbers show the Exchange handing over equality, then worse. Win chance is 50 at move 12 against a 53 baseline, and 44 at move 20, your lowest of any opening. You reach move 10 on 576 seconds, so it is not time. Early errors are 0.4 per game, the highest of any opening, and blunders run at 1.0. Conversion is weak at 7 of 11. The 4 Classical Variation games (3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bf5) scored 25%, so switching to the main line on the fly hasn't worked either. All of this is from 15 games, so treat it as a strong signal, not proof.

What you're missing

  1. 01

Rook-ending checks: 35.Ke2 instead of Ra8+ (73% to 52%), 50.Rb1 instead of Ra7+ (80% to 53%), and 53.Rf8 instead of Rg8, which allowed mate (50% to 0%). Three missed rook-endgame resources in recent games, all in these long simplified endings.

  2. 02

Recapture choice: 24.Bxg6 instead of hxg6 (66% to 35%) was a missed tactic in a structural decision, and it cost you the position.

  3. 03

A plan out of the opening: win chance falls from 50 at move 12 to 44 at move 20. In the Exchange, Black's minority attack with ...b5-b4 is the plan, and you need a kingside answer before it lands.

  4. 04

Early precision: 0.4 early errors per game is roughly three times your Sicilian rate, and 2 losses came from hung pieces.

How to improve it

  1. 01

If you keep the 7.Qb3 Exchange line, know the main tries. After 7...Qd7 8.Nd2 e6 9.Ngf3, Black usually trades on f3 and plays ...Bd6. After 7...Na5 8.Qa4+ Bd7 9.Qc2, the knight on a5 is offside. Don't grab on b7: 7...Qd7 8.Qxb7? Rb8 9.Qa6 hands Black the initiative.

  2. 02

Your plan in this structure is kingside: Ngf3-e5, Qc2 or Qe2, Rae1, and f4 or a Qf3-h3 swing. Pair it with a prepared queenside answer (a4 or b4) to slow ...b5.

  3. 03

Given your Sicilian and French results, consider switching to the Advance with the Short System (3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 e6 5.Be2 c5 6.Be3). It gives you space and the attacking play you do well in, instead of the symmetrical equality you are getting now.

  4. 04

In rook endings, make checking from behind or from the side your first candidate. Three of your four recent mistakes here were rook checks or rook activity.

Next steps

01

Switch to the Advance Short

Prep 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 e6 5.Be2 to move 12 and use it for the next 15 Caro-Kann games, then compare against 47%.

02

Drill rook-endgame checks

Do 20 rook-ending exercises focused on checking distance and back-rank mating nets. You missed Ra8+, Ra7+ and allowed mate in recent games.

03

Learn the minority attack defence

If you keep the Exchange, study 3 model games in which White meets ...b5-b4 with a kingside attack, so you have a plan by move 20.
